For a long time, starting a blog was just a way to get on the bandwagon of making money online, and maybe to have a simple portfolio site of the work I was doing. I spent a few months looking into that world. I thought I would set-up a niche blog, find a few keywords, write some articles (or pay someone else to write them for me), and let google adsense and affiliate money lay a foundation for passive income. Thankfully, things didn’t turn out that way.
Maybe that way of making money is good for some people, if they can pull it off, but I know myself enough to know that even after a lot of effort into preparing this type of business model, I would have lost interest in it really quickly. My heart just wouldn’t have been into it without a purpose.
So then, what is my purpose now? Why am I blogging? I’m sure the answer will change over time. For now, I can think of only one thing.
I want to serve independent filmmakers
I see this blog as a future resource to support filmmakers with their brands, while also using Previs animation services to pitch their movies to sites like Kickstarter and IndieGogo. What I’m trying to do here in the long run is to create a way for investors to fund film visions that independent film makers create. Using my services, it will be far easier for their projects to be approved and moved forward.
I’d like this blog to be a platform for my learning as well. The idea of becoming a previs artist and bringing this idea to reality motivates me. I like the idea of helping filmmakers bring their ideas to life. Bringing together the subjects of animation and film language will be tough to learn by far. There will always be obstacles because there is so much learning to do, if I want to be great, or even reasonable! But, I’m up for the challenge.
To become the best animator I can be, and build this site to where I want it, I’m looking at attending an online school called Animation Mentor. Before I get there though, one of the things that I have to do is practice long enough to be accepted into their advanced placement program. This is what I initially will be trying to do over the next year. It’s my start on this blog’s journey.
This blog is my learning progress as I go towards reaching all of these goals. It’s a tall order and I don’t know what will happen down the road, but I’m looking forward to it anyways. I’ve had a couple years of learning so far, so I’m not starting from scratch. I just finished a few tutorial books: Mastering Maya 2013 and VFX for Maya. The next book waiting on my list is a character animation book called How to Cheat in Maya 2014. This book is based on tips and tricks and as a resource to move me in the right direction.
My previous working career has been spent in many different areas of customer service over the years. I want my blog to do something similar and teach, inspire creativity, and most of all, help people find new ways to experiment with the way animation, virtual production, and Previs is evolving today.
